BILINGUAL
IMMERSION: ENGLISH & MANDARIN
|
Pat's Schoolhouse was the first
in Singapore to introduce the Bilingual Immersion
programme. This innovative approach to language learning was conceptualised
by Mrs Patricia Koh and was implemented successfully at her centres.
This unprecedented decision to assign an English teacher and a Mandarin
teacher to each class provided the children with maximum exposure
to both languages, thus providing the "Bilingual Immersion"
effect as it was aptly termed.
Since 1988, thousands of children have
experienced the benefits of having both an English teacher and a Mandarin
teacher working as co-partners in the classroom. The teachers do not
just teach but interact with the children, using their respective
languages which exposes the children to everyday language and encourages
the use of both languages throughout the day.
By the time a child graduates from Pat's Schoolhouse, he will be proficient
in two languages, are articulate, expressive and will be able to cope
well in the best primary schools.
