Our Buckley & Serangoon children did us proud on 9 August at
the Yishun leg of the “Celebration @ Heartlands” event.
The evening event began with about 40 enthusiastic children from
Serangoon welcoming the ministers as they sang “Jia”
(Chinese for ‘Home’) alongside Lilian Chua, a compere-singer
from Music & Movement. Singing against a large national flag
as their backdrop, these children dressed in white Pat’s Schoolhouse
tops and red pants waved their hands from side to side, singing
from their hearts about Singapore being their home and their country.
As a special item later on, about 20 children from Buckley sang
and danced with clogs on their feet and drums in their hands. It
was visually captivating as these children displayed choreographed
movements in their hip chinoiserie tops and denim jeans.
Donna,
principal at Buckley, shares “The children really surprised
us with what they can do. Some initially had problems remembering
the dance steps and lyrics but were able to perform them so well
in the end.”
“I feel good that our Serangoon children get a chance to
be involved in the nation’s huge celebration. It is such an
honour!” exclaims Euphemia, the principal at Serangoon. She
continues, “I love the innocent sound of these children’s
voices… I really felt renewed patriotism for our country that
night.”
