Husband & wife duo, Andrew Ong & Ruth Chia, above left, put their heads and hands together to create a Lilliputian Tower out of straws, plastercine and pipe cleaners that would hold a weighted ball for at least 30 seconds. The team who fashioned such a tower with the lowest expenditure (each item had a price tag) wins.
Through this, 30 parents learnt that children learn an astounding variety of Math concepts in one game - e.g. estimation, gravity, structure, money concepts and teamwork. Andrew comments, “This was useful and enlightening; it offered a fresh perspective to Math.”
About getting children to experience math in everyday situations instead of teaching it formally, Tan Wee Ping shares, “I’m going to let my son pay for things at the supermarket – he can learn how to count items, calculate change, measure space in a trolley and estimate items that can fit into a bag!”
Above Right: Parents enjoy learning Math patterns through rhythm & songs!
