The front-of-room ensemble of a Queen’s cape, a Cat’s headgear and other language-learning props packed in a child’s luggage drew inquisitive looks from many of the 40 participants, eager to listen to Mrs. Patricia Koh, Founder-Director of Pat’s Schoolhouse. Organizers had to turn away 12-15 participants this time, due to an overwhelming response. The essential nature of the topic prompted many parents to sign up in advance, keen to get things right early in their children’s lives.
Beginning with an overview of the process involved in reading and writing, Mrs. Koh helped parents understand the various approaches in learning and review early childhood experts’ research findings. Introducing the “Language Experience Approach to Learning”, Mrs. Koh proceeded to help parents understand the logical approach of Letterland and its use amongst pre-schoolers. She says, "Letterland provides a realistic parallel world which bridges the gap between abstract print and real world, creating a secure learning environment where children can happily develop cognitive, language and literacy skills".
Tan Mei Mei commented, “It’s so enlightening to see alphabets come alive by giving them a character.”
Peppering her presentation with amusing anecdotes from real-life experiences, Mrs. Koh helped parents enjoy the practical benefits of Letterland and take home many tips for their children’s growth. Colene Chua exclaims, “Mrs. Koh offers very good tips and she definitely knows what she's delivering; I’d certainly recommend this to other parents, the talk is very interesting.”
Many participants have requested for a follow-up workshop, “Letterland Level Two” – look out for that in the second half of 2006!
