Cookies & Coffee Workshop 4

When others see a child misbehaving in public places, it is almost certain that they would blame the parents for not teaching the child to behave. Often, these embarrassed parents would find this quite exasperating and not know how to react. Often, when we are not at our emotional best, our use of reason often disappears and we become really lost.

Mrs Patricia Koh helped 45 parents understand the various patterns and causes of misbehaviours so that they are more equipped to manage and guide their children effectively. She helped the group differentiate between misbehaviours initiated by parents' poor communication or unrealistic demands, and misbehaviours initiated by the child's defiance or lack of obedience.

A series of case studies from books and movies also helped to shed light on the problems. Grace Kwa comments, "The video shows were very interesting to watch, as they showed how others succeeded, e.g. Anne Sullivan." Priscilla Lee agrees, "It's good to realize how movies and books can be used as parenting materials and applied to daily lives."

Many members of the group felt at ease to speak up about their personal issues, and benefitted from on-the-spot diagnosis and advice from Patricia Koh. Irene Khaw shares, "I especially appreciated listening to the sharing from other parents, and then Mrs Koh's practical and valuable advice."

Perhaps Gomanthi summed it up when she said, "I learnt the importance of Patience, Calmness and Consistency. This workshop was very motivating and I received good advice."
